As members of Zion Baptist Church, our congregational identity is shaped by the values by which we live. Accordingly, we believe the following:

Biblically Centered
II Timothy 3:16-17; II Peter 1:20-21
We believe that all Scripture is divinely inspired and serves as the final authority in all matters of belief and behavior.

Worship
John 4:23-24
We believe that the ultimate reason for our existence is to worship and glorify God. For that reason, we seek to provide a worship friendly environment for individuals and families.

Prayer
I Thessalonians 5:17
We believe prayer is a privilege and responsibility of every member of Zion Baptist Church. Through prayer, we experience the unleashing of God’s power, purpose, and presence in our lives.

Stewardship
I Corinthians 4:2
We believe that all that we have been given and all that we have has been entrusted to us by God. We commit ourselves to properly managing the time, talents, and treasures given to us, knowing that one day we will have to give an account of our stewardship.

Evangelism
Acts 1:8
We value the privilege to be called and charged by God to fulfill the great commission locally, nationally, and globally.

Family Friendly
Ephesians 6:1-4
We believe that we are called to build strong marriages and families where God's love is taught and lived out, where husbands love their wives as Christ loved the church, where wives respect their husbands, where the hearts of the parents are turned toward their children and the hearts of the children toward their parents.

Discipleship
Matthew 28:19-20
We believe that we are called to become like Christ through intentional growth and development by learning and practicing the will, Word, and ways of God.

Outwardly Focused
Philippians 2:2-4
We believe that we are called to go beyond the walls of the church to minister the love of God in a life giving way.

Growth
Ephesians 4:11-16
We believe that we are called to demonstrate the love of God as we grow personally, and as the church grows collectively. By so doing, we are able to honor God spiritually, congregationally, numerically, and financially.

Love
I John 3:14; John 13:35
We believe that we are called to live out our Christian witness as we demonstrate our love to God, our neighbors, and the world.

Forward Thinking
Luke 14:28-32
We believe that we are called to honor our past by intentionally challenging ministry practices to adapt and creatively meet the demands of the future.

Leadership
Matthew 20:2-6; Luke 12:48b
We believe that we are called to lead, respect leadership, and grow leaders for the kingdom.

Zion Baptist Church is kingdom focused. Our mission is to grow the kingdom by winning souls, strengthening the family, and developing godly leaders for community transformation.

2023 THEME: A New Beginning - Isaiah 43:19

Dr. Kelvin E. Turner, Senior Pastor Dr. Kelvin E. Turner has dedicated his life to teaching and preaching the Word of God.  Having been called to pastor the historic Zion Baptist Church of Portsmouth, Virginia on December 6, 2008, he is the l0th Pastor in the church’s 158-year history.

Due to a horrific fire, Dr. Turner arrived with no physical church home.  He faithfully and immediately began efforts to locate a worship center for Zion and successfully led efforts to revitalize the congregational spirit.  In less than 2 years, Dr. Turner and the Zion Baptist Church congregation purchased a multi-million-dollar historic worship, discipleship and ministry center in the historic Parkview community of Portsmouth, Virginia.  Three years later, in August 2014, Dr. Turner then led the church efforts in completing an additional $2.3 million-dollar renovation effort of the facility, that now provides state of the art meeting rooms and technology, expanding the church’s vision to reach souls in a more global way.  A native of Detroit Michigan, he is a graduate of Wayne State University, where he earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology.  He continued his education at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, earning a Masters of Divinity in Christian Education, and a Doctorate of Ministry at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC.

Having served in pastoral ministry (Associate Minister, Youth Pastor, Pastor, Executive Pastor, and Senior Pastor) in Michigan, Kentucky, Washington District of Columbia, Ohio, Tennessee; and now Virginia; Dr. Turner has always served the communities where he lived and worked.  His past service on and with local and national boards includes: the Northern Ohio Baptist Congress of Christian Education (President); Youngstown Extension of the American Baptist College (Director); Youngstown Area Community Action Council (President); Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (President); the Governor's appointee for the Commission on African American Males (Ohio); the National City Bank Community Board (Ohio); Parkview Counseling Center (Board member - Ohio); Eagle Heights Academy (Board member - Ohio); and Habitat for Humanity (Board member – Tennessee).

Since coming to Virginia, he has continued his commitment to community service with the following organization: Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless (past President); American Baptist Churches of the South (President Area II Ministers); Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Virginia (Past President); Ida Barbour Early Learning Center (former board member), Martin Luther King Jr. Steering Committee (Past Vice-President), Legacy Learning Academy (Board chair) and the Civil Service Commission for the City of Portsmouth (Board Chair).

Dr. Turner has traveled extensively both in the US and abroad, in support of national and international humanitarian efforts while sharing the gospel of our Lord and Savior.  He is a proven leader, equipped to make an impact upon whomever he meets with the power of God, through his many talents and gifts.  Above all, his role as Husband and Father is his most valued treasure. He has been married to Leading Lady, Karen Minor-Turner for 39 years, and they are the proud parents of three adult children, Kelvin Eric Turner II, Kandace Joyce Turner-Ford (Glenn), and Dr. Karisma Elyce Turner- Winfrey, (Delano); and three grandchildren, Glenn Lamar Ford, Turner Iman Winfrey and Devyn Jael Winfrey.

About Zion Baptist Church

Welcome one and all to our fellowship. Here at Zion we believe that we are all members of the family of God. We are striving, with the spirit’s help, to live out the words of St. Paul in Ephesians:

"There is one body and one Spirit-just as you were called to one hope when you were called-one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." (Ephesians 4:4-6)

If you are a baptized believer in Jesus Christ, you are a part of the family. If you are not, won’t you come and claim Him today?
